Overview


The Graduate Institute of Networking and Multimedia (GINM)was founded in 2004 with the approval from the Ministry of Education. GINM, Graduate Institute of Biomedical Electronics and Bioinformatics, and Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering together form the Computer Science Division in the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. GINM currently has 17 full-time professors, 39 joint-appointment professors, and 5 adjunct professors.
 
The research mission of GINM lies in academic innovation and industrial application, and particularly in interdisciplinary collaboration. In order to narrow the gap between academics and industry, GINM designs its curriculum focusing on major areas including Networking, Multimedia, Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, and Systems & Applications. The goal is to educate and train high level talent with advanced technology to meet the needs of the country in advancing national information infrastructure and developing networking and multimedia industry. GINM actively cooperates with the industry to increase the applicability of academic research and assist in advancing research capabilities of the industry while also encourages innovation and entrepreneurship.
 
Every year, GINM admits 42 students for its Master's program and 9 students for its Doctoral program through standard entrance exam and recommendation application. GINM also accepts applications from international and overseas Chinese students. In order to promote multi-disciplinary cooperation, GINM encourages prospective students with experiences from other majors, such as Psychology, Art, and Design, to apply for admission. Working professionals are also admitted to foster university-industry collaboration. The curriculum of GINM is designed to cover both theoretical and practical concepts and balance between breadth (covering the fields of Multimedia, Networking, Systems and Applications, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) and depth (with various fundamental, core, and advanced courses and independent studies).
 
GINM focuses on four major research areas.
In the field of Networking, GINM focuses on Internet of Things, Software Defined Networking, Network Security, and Low Latency Communication. GINM enjoys major breakthrough in Heterogeneous Communication and Security Protocols, Network Cross Layer Design, and Network Performance Analysis and Enhancement.
In the field of Multimedia, researches include Image Processing, Image Recognition, Human Computer Interaction, and Virtual Reality. In the recent years, GINM makes great impact in Virtual Reality Systems and Applications, Human Machine Interaction Mechanism, and Large Scale Photo/Video Retrieval and Mining.
For Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, GINM is dedicated to develop Big Data and Machine Learning algorithms to perform diverse Structured and Unstructured Data analytics.
For Systems and Applications, GIMN is dedicated to build next generation High Performance, Low Power Computing System, including Smart Mobile Device, Internet of Things, and Cloud Computing. We have made great progress in IOT Middleware Design, Heterogeneous Computing, and Storage System for Big Data.
